As we head into the new year, USTA Southern California would like to provide some updates on our programming.
TOURNAMENTS:
We anticipate that scheduling of USTA tournaments will resume on February 6th, 2021. It is our hope that we can confidently release a more normal schedule of tournament play without the high risk of COVID-related cancellations that we have experienced throughout much of 2020.
For those of you watching National Ranking Points closely, please be assured that this development will have no adverse impact on your national positioning. While all USTA Sections address sweeping pandemic concerns and variable limitations nationwide, some may return to tournament play before we do. However, our 12-month season will allow us to play as many or more events than virtually every other Section.
Additionally, the Sections meet weekly with USTA Player Development to ensure we maintain fairness and equity among all of the Section’s competitive players in determining National rankings. Everyone understands that we are in a unique period of time, and all necessary steps will be taken to maintain as much equity as possible.
LEAGUES:
USTA Southern California foresees the resumption of any new USTA League programming no sooner than February 2021. We intend to kick off the 2021 League season with new FLEX format options, followed by a transition into traditional League formats as local restrictions on adult team sports are lifted. It is our hope to host our full calendar of Leagues with Section Championships, and we will be evaluating the feasibility of this plan every two weeks as we enter the new year. If it is safe and reasonable to finish our Fall 2020 FLEX program during January, we will do so.
Please enjoy the next couple of months. Play recreational tennis as much as you can – it remains one of the few sports that are expressly allowed and recommended during the pandemic.
