The Director of Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Community Tennis develops and strengthens community tennis opportunities in Southern California implementing an integrated strategy for outreach to multicultural organizations within and outside the tennis ecosystem. The Director will focus on strategic planning, partnerships and management of staff and volunteers. You will build and maintain relationships with local tennis organizations (CTA’s, NJTL’s, Park and Recreation Departments, and Schools Tennis) while considering various experiences, backgrounds and perspectives of participants. The Director will consider data derived from research to construct a plan recognizing diversity, equity and inclusion as a core value. This position requires you to serve and collaborate as a liaison to all relevant USTA and Southern California committees while managing the Community Tennis department.
The Director will oversee a staff of 3-5 individuals

Primary Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director
  • Works with other staff members across departments
  • Works with committee chairs and responsible officers
  • Works with the National Diversity and Inclusion department
  • Works with Section and local volunteers at the Community Tennis Association level
  • Include Diverse providers and/or organizations that serve diverse audiences
  • Culitivate relationships with diverses community leaders and introduce tennis as a sport that provides growth and positive development
  • Identify responsible tennis instructors to support community tennis programs

Principle Accountabilities

  • Build and manage various cross-departmental projects that develop teamwork and cohesion
  • Utilize various research mechanisms and tools to capture data that strengthens the business value of diversity, equity and inclusion and informs strategy
  • Assist with the interview and hiring process for USTA Southern California and volunteer selection process for committees/project teams
  • Acquire, evaluate, and maintain volunteer and staff demographics to report to the USTA National office on a yearly basis
  • Discover, advocate for, and implement new technology tools across USTA Southern California to streamline processes and enhance efficiency
  • Provide support to the Southern California Tennis Foundation
  • Collaborate with USTA National on special projects, workgroups, staff retreats, and monthly conference calls
  • Provide diversity and inclusion education and training to staff, volunteers, Community Tennis Associations, and other stakeholders
  • Attend in-person and virtual conferences and share learnings with staff and volunteers Collaborates with the Director of HR in identifying staff training needs and ongoing support
  • Provide policy and procedures guidelines for the employee and volunteer handbooks
  • Manage budgets for Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Community Tennis
  • Sets Department Goals and adjusts as needed while following current data analytics
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience
  • 3-5 years of previous experience in Diversity and Inclusion, corporate strategy, business operations in a sports organization
  • A proven track record engaging with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with USTA and/or CTA’s, NJTL or Schools
  • Experience with non-profit, volunteer based organization
  • Background with operation and/or implementing USTA Tennis programs
    Experience managing and direction remote staff

  • Ability to identify and advocate for new and innovative ways to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Ability to find creative solutions and possibility in the face of obstacles
  • Skilled in building Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives from scratch
  • Skilled at working in a cross-functional environment with varying stakeholders and decision-makers
  • Ability to work and problem solve autonomously
  • Ability to use data and research to tell a story and build strategies for inclusion
  • Experience conducting research
  • Interest in the sports and entertainment industry in a non-profit setting
  • Ability to work with volunteers and follow non-profit systems of operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to navigate sensitive subjects and foster relationships with staff and volunteers who have varying degrees of comfort with diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to learn additional technological skills, software as needed
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Willingness to grow and learn
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Ability to travel and work weekends as needed (approximately 20% of time)

Physical Requirements

  • May require extended time outdoors with temperatures above 90 degrees
  • May require lifting boxes/equipment
