USTA Southern California has named Mark McCampbell of Ventura County as the February 2023 Tournament Director of the Month.

If you have played tennis in Ventura County in the last 25 years, you know Mark McCampbell. He grew up playing tennis throughout the local area with a very active tennis family. Mark learned at an early age how to run tennis tournaments. His father, Bob McCampbell, ran local tournaments and had a pro shop, while his brother John is still a popular tennis coach at the Malibu Racquet Club.

Mark had a very successful competitive junior and college tennis career. He began his teaching career in Germany with the Vic Braden Academy in 1989 and returned to take over the operations of the Oxnard Tennis Center, where his father and brother had started 10 years prior. Over the last 25 years, Mark has coached thousands of students, from NCAA Division I Champions to current WTA and ATP touring professionals, while continuing to cultivate a grass-roots tennis program. He has been selected yearly as a National Junior Team Coach for Southern California and heading the USTA Competition Training Center for the Central Coast.

He has received numerous awards and acclaim from the tennis world, including the Outstanding Service Award and Outstanding Tennis Coach from the Southern California Tennis Association. Mark is a National Advisory Staff member for Babolat. He is a certified instructor of the Professional Tennis Registry and an elite professional of the USPTA. He is also certified Master Racquet Technician by the U.S. Racquet Stringers Association. Mark was recently honored to present to National Tournament Directors on tournament hospitality.

Mark has received praise from a multitude of players that participate in his tournaments and has been described as “an awesome tournament director” and “friendly and funny.” Participants have also made note of his professionalism with tournaments: “It was great that matches started at posted time. Very efficient and well-planned draw times.”
