Captains must fill out and submit a Sectional Championship Registration Form  once the Area League Coordinator has confirmed their advancement. Registration forms must be submitted no later than 2 weeks prior to the event. 

Team Fee – $150

All teams must be able to field full teams.  If you cannot field a full team (8 players) or if your team is unable to participate, advise your Area League Coordinator immediately.  Teams that drop out and fail to complete the event once it has started, can result in loss of future rights to play in the USTA Southern California League program.   

Penalties may be given at the discretion of the Championship Director and Committee. (Refer to the USTA League Regulations 2.03K/2.03L –Team Defaults).  (Exceptions may include: illness, injury, or personal emergency).

All team members must have current USTA Memberships through the last day of championship play.  Players can renew or check expirations at membership.usta.com

There will be random Photo ID checks throughout Sectionals.

Minimum # of players required for a full team:  8 Players for the 5 – line formats

Minimum number of matches required to advance past local league: 2 played matches one of which can be a default.  (NOTE: Minimum number of matches required to advance to Nationals: 2 played matches none of which can be a default.)

The NTRP Level of all individual team members must be from the appropriate level of play in accordance with the NTRP system.

Each participating player much sign and submit a waiver.  Failure to do so may result in match default or reversal.  
 

A match will consist of 2 singles and 3 doubles positions (3.0-4.5 levels); 1 singles and 2 doubles positions (2.5 5.0 & Open levels)

All matches played will be the best of three sets, with regular scoring and a set tiebreak (first to 7 by 2) at 6-all in each set.  In the event of split sets, a deciding match tiebreak (first to 10 by 2) shall be played in lieu of a third set.  The Coman Tiebreak Rotation (change ends after the first point and every 4 points thereafter) will be used for all Set and Match TiebreaksTwo-minute rest between the 1st and 2nd set and between the 2nd set and a Match Tiebreak.

Flighted Divisions will participate in a round-robin format within their flight.  The winner of each flight will be determined by team matches won.  In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken by the first of the following procedures:

  • Individual Matches: Winner of the most individual matches
  • Head-to-Head: Winner of head-to-head match
  • Sets: Loser of the fewest number of sets
  • Games: Loser of the fewest number of games
  • A method to be determined by the championship committee

If there is more than one flight, Flight winners will advance to single elimination bracket play to determine a champion.

Un-flighted Divisions will participate in two randomly generated matches.  The top two finishers will advance to single elimination bracket play to determine a champion.  In the event of a tie after random match play, the tie will be broken by the first of the following procedures:

  • Individual Matches: Winner of the most individual matches
  • Head-to-Head: Winner of head-to-head match
  • Sets: Loser of the fewest number of sets
  • Games: Loser of the fewest number of games
  • A method to be determined by the championship committee

If the championship or part of the championship is canceled due to unplayable conditions, the championship may be rescheduled.  If the championship is not rescheduled, the Championship Director and/or Championship Committee will determine the champion and finalist by using one or a combination of the following based on completed matches at the championship:  Team(s) with the best record and/or highest percentage of wins.

The Section League Coordinator or the Championship Committee shall have the right to modify the format and scoring or use alternate sites and court surfaces in order to complete play on schedule in the event that there are more or fewer teams than anticipated, defaults, unplayable conditions, or any other reason, which would necessitate a change in the announced format.

Singles Stick will not be used. 

Score tenders will be used if available onsite.

Coaching is not permitted. (No cell phones or electronic devices allowed on the court)

Warm up courts will not be available. 

Warm up and Default – There will be a five-minute warm-up period, including practice serves. The USTA Point Penalty System may be used when players are late, and courts are available:

5:00 minutes or less – Loss of Toss + 1 game

5:01 to 10 min. – Loss of Toss + 2 games

10:01 to 15 min. – Loss of Toss + 3 games

Over 15 min. – Default

3.0 Men – winner will be determined by standings after round robin play.

4.0 Men – round robin flight play.  Flight winners advance to a single elimination bracket.

5.0 Men – winner will be determined by standing after round robin play.

3.0 Women – round robin flight play.  Flight winners advance to a single elimination bracket.

4.0 Women – round robin flight play.  Flight winners and three second best finishers advance to a single elimination bracket.

5.0 Women – winner will be determined by standings after round robin play.

Captains should check in at the tournament desk and collect their scorecards no later than 15 minutes before match time. The Tournament Desk must be notified if there are any defaults or missing player issues. 

All players listed on the scorecard must be onsite and ready to play once the scorecard is turned in.

Once turned in, line-ups cannot be changed without the approval of the championship director.

Match order is determined by the Tournament Desk.

Immediately after an individual match is finished, a player from each team reports and confirms the score at the tournament desk. 

Upon the completion of the individual matches, both captains must verify the scores and sign the match scorecard. 

Score discrepancies will be addressed at that time.  If only one captain signed the scorecard and there is a discrepancy, those results may be FINAL.  

Rest in between matches is dependent on when a player finishes their match and when their next match is scheduled. Other individual matches can start prior to the resting players adjusted start time.  When playing singles or doubles to doubles players are given a minimum rest time of 30 minutes.  When playing singles to singles players are given a minimum rest time of one hour.

Winning teams will be eligible to participate in the USTA Adult 18 & Over National Championships. Details and Information will be provided to the 2021 Championship teams.

If the winning team at any NTRP level of competition is unable to compete further, then the second-place team will be asked to take their spot.

  • Roving umpires are officials who exercise jurisdiction over more than one court. Their duties are similar to those of a chair umpire and include but are not limited to the following:
    • Ensuring that assigned courts are ready for play
    • Enforcing the warm-up time and Point Penalty System
    • Resolving scoring disputes
    • Ensuring that assigned courts are ready for play
    • Overruling line calls and calling foot faults when they are in direct observation of the courts
    • Controlling spectators

Roving umpires may be positioned inside the fenced areas and will interfere with play as little as possible.  Players should be encouraged to play tennis without the need for umpires.  In the case of disputed calls and upon the request of the player, a roving umpire, if available, may oversee the match.

Lunch Tickets

Captains will be given team lunch tickets at check in.  A Grab n Go boxed lunch will be served on Saturday only at both Costa Mesa and Los Cab beginning at 11:30. 

  • 12 tickets for 5 line teams
  • 9 tickets for 3 line teams

Gifts and Awards

  • 15 Player gifts will be available for each team.
  • Champion Awards for the 1st place team of each level. Finalists awards for the 2nd place team of each level. Maximum of 15 per team.
