Winter Nationals proves to be showcase for top #TeamSoCal juniors

#TeamSoCal rarely returns from national competition empty handed, and last weekend at Winter Nationals were no exception. Led by a powerful performance in Boys 14s, local juniors hoisted multiple trophies across all age divisions at the USTA National Winter Championships, one of five junior USTA National Championship events that make up the USTA adidas Junior Championship Series.

In Arizona, the Boys 14s draw was dominated by #TeamSoCal, including an all-SoCal final between champion Jagger Leach and finalist Nathaniel Suh. Leach, of Laguna Beach, needed three sets to dispatch Orange’s Suh, who also went the distance in his semifinal against Los Angeles’ Ford McCollum before they joined forces to reach the doubles quarters. SoCal dominated the doubles final, where Chula Vista’s Adrien Abarca teamed with Jon Gamble of Las Vegas (that’s right, Gamble… of Vegas) to emerge from an evenly contested championship against San Diego’s Andrew Li and Nischal Spurling on Los Angeles, 7-5, 5-7 (10-4).

In Girls 16s, Olivia Center & Katie Fakih are champions in doubles. Center, from South Pasadena, and Fakih from Pasadena, rebounded to lock up a 3-6, 7-5 (10-4) win over Elena Zhao & Mia Yamakita to capture the title. Claire Zhang, Jessica MacCallum, and Maren Urata were among the #TeamSoCal juniors posting strong finished in 16s, along with Lucas Coriaty’s third place finish in Boys 16s.

Carlsbad’s Katie Codd will head to Duke in the fall, but she’s not done in the junior realm just yet. Codd reached the 18s finals at Winter Nationals, where Tsehay Driscoll (La Canada Flintridge) finished in third place and reached the quarters in doubles with Isabella Chhiv of Irvine.

In Boys 12s, Tustin’s Tyler Lee teamed with Southwest’s Aditya Pandey to reach the finals in doubles action, while Porter Ranch’s Adrian Sharma & Kiran Spurling of Los Angeles reached the quarterfinals.
